Mendoza may seem like a small mountain town at times, but we do get some fabulous international imports, and during July that special import was an art exhibition.
A collection of Miro originals and prints in the Municipal de Arte Moderno de Mendoza (MAMM) has certainly been one of the artistic highlights of the year in the city with the modern art space hotly attended by locals and tourists during the month-long exhibition. This small art gallery is tucked underneath the main fountain in Plaza Independencia and has one room which is where the Miro paintings were hanging.
A collection of his work from the 50s, 60s and 70s, the ‘El Jardin de las Maravillas’ exhibition had 56 works of art, showing a wide spectrum of his changing styles but consistent identity through his illustrious career. Timing of this exhibition was apt and the collection was selected to commemorate the 120 year anniversary of his birth. Miro was a Catalan painter who belonged to the surrealist movement and is world renowned for his bold and striking paintings which have become an icon in the art world. With a strong following in Argentina, this exhibition in Mendoza was one of the most popular so far this year and offers a great cultural diversion while in the city center.
If you still haven’t visited the Miro exhibition, it is open till August 4.
